Dylan Young’s project, Way Dynamic, has been quietly simmering since his university days in Melbourne, but it’s only recently that his music has started to resonate beyond local circles. With a sound rooted in ’60s and ’70s rock, Young’s approach is both nostalgic and refreshingly unpretentious, emphasizing raw, immediate recordings and heartfelt songwriting. His latest album, Massive Shoe, channels influences from Paul McCartney to Nick Drake, yet it remains unmistakably his own. The record’s charm lies in its effortless blend of vintage vibe and modern indie sensibility.

The album’s success on streaming platforms caught the attention of Jagjaguwar, which is reissuing Massive Shoe with a bonus track, “Officially,” signaling broader recognition. Originally released through Melbourne’s Spoilsport Records, the record has become a streaming sensation, hinting at a growing international audience. Young’s music was meant to be part of a US tour this fall, but visa issues have pushed those plans into early next year. Despite the delay, the record’s appeal is clear—its relaxed authenticity makes it an easy listen, perfect for those craving honest, unpolished indie.

Young’s musical journey stretches back to his childhood, playing guitar from age eight and participating in local bands throughout his teens. His early groups ranged from a Foals-inspired outfit to a band influenced by the Kinks, showcasing his eclectic taste. He explains that Way Dynamic started as a university project—a way to push himself creatively without the constraints of commercial expectation. Since then, the project has served as a vessel for his evolving influences, from lo-fi recordings to more polished arrangements, always maintaining a focus on capturing raw emotion.

His collaboration with Stefan Blair of Good Morning, which includes co-producing and occasional band membership, has been central to shaping his sound. Young’s commitment to analog recording and his straightforward approach to songwriting keep his music grounded. When asked about his influences, he describes a desire to avoid losing the essence of his project amid stylistic shifts, though he hopes future releases will explore new directions. The core of Way Dynamic remains rooted in simplicity, honesty, and a love for classic songcraft.

Despite the delays, the momentum around Young’s music keeps building. His ability to blend influences with a distinctive voice, combined with his dedication to authenticity, suggests that Way Dynamic is just entering a new phase. As his sound continues to develop, listeners can expect more honest, unpretentious music that feels both timeless and entirely his own. It’s a reminder that sometimes, letting things flow naturally results in the best music—music that lives and breathes.
