Cloud Nothings Dive Into Heavy Metal with New Album 'What Kind of Hell Did You Survive?'
The indie rock stalwarts are shedding their familiar sound for a darker, metal-infused direction in their upcoming album, highlighted by the visceral single 'Death Keeps Me Alive.'

After nearly two decades carving out a space in indie rock, Cloud Nothings are pivoting toward the heavier side of the spectrum with their upcoming album, 'What Kind of Hell Did You Survive?,' set for release on January 29. The band’s latest effort signals a deliberate shift, embracing influences from stoner metal, post-hardcore, and doom, a move that broadens their sonic landscape beyond the familiar jangly guitars and raw angst they've cultivated over the years.
The album’s lead single, 'Death Keeps Me Alive,' exemplifies this heavier direction. The track features a pounding, doom-laden riff reminiscent of Cave-In and the Wipers, with a touch of black metal intensity towards the end. Drummer Jayson Gerycz's thunderous, rapid-fire percussion anchors the song's brutal energy, while frontman Dylan Baldi’s lyrics explore themes of lurking evil, death, war, and hate—an intentionally dark, metal-inspired lyrical palette. Baldi describes the song as an homage to the heavy rock influences they've been listening to recently, including Queens of the Stone Age, Motörhead, Earth, and Electric Wizard.
The band openly discusses feeling pigeonholed in the indie scene and wanting to explore new sonic territory. In Baldi’s words, the album represents a new facet of Cloud Nothings, even if it’s a departure from their previous work. The lyrics, inspired by political metal and hardcore, evoke a sense of rage and frustration with global issues, making the album a more aggressive, visceral experience. The record is a nine-song journey that aims to challenge their established sound and showcase a heavier, more intense side of the band.

The accompanying black-and-white music video for 'Death Keeps Me Alive,' directed by Alex Scalzo-Brown, adds a spooky, seasonal vibe to the release, reinforcing the song’s dark tone. The visual complements the track’s ominous riffs and themes, making it clear the band is serious about their metal-inspired reinvention. This move isn’t just a one-off experiment; it’s a full-fledged sonic and lyrical overhaul that redefines what fans can expect from Cloud Nothings in 2024.
The new album, titled 'What Kind of Hell Did You Survive?,' is their first major departure from their established indie rock sound. With influences rooted in heavy, doomy, and black metal, the record promises a more intense listening experience. Pre-orders are live, and the band plans a tour that will likely showcase their heavier new material live. The shift signifies a bold chapter in their 17-year career, highlighting their willingness to evolve and embrace darker, more aggressive music forms.
